11 world-class stars who won't play in World Cup 2022: Jorginho, Marco Verratti, Martin Odegaard...

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup consecutively. Once again the final will lose star names including Jorginho, Marco Verratti and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

However, they won't be the only big names to miss the show. Goaljersey Editor has picked 11 players who will be watching from a distance as the year-end games begin.

The World Cup is a showcase for the best players in the world, however, these world-class soccer players won’t be flying to the Middle East this November.

Jorginho

We start our list with third place behind Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski at last year's Ballon d'Or ceremony.

Jorginho has enjoyed great success since joining Chelsea from Napoli in 2018, winning the Europa League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Champions League at Stamford Bridge. After an incredible 2021 which had seen the 30-year-old become a European champion with club and country, Jorginho also received plenty of recognition during the campaign, being named in the FIFA FIFPro Men’s World 11, selected by professional players around the world, alongside midfield partner N'Golo Kante, before receiving the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award and coming third in the vote for the Ballon d'Or.

What does Jorginho play for?

The Italian international is a highly technical midfielder capable of dictating the tempo of play in possession with quick passing and movement. He has most often been deployed as a deep-lying playmaker in midfield, using his ability to link defence and attack.

Where was Jorginho born?

Although he was born in Imbituba, Brazil, Jorginho's nationality is Italian. On the international level, he plays for Italy's national team which is famous for being the most tactical national football league. So far they have won 48 European trophies and earned the name of the second most successful nation in European football.

Marco Verratti

Verratti has had a brutal few weeks. Club side Paris Saint-Germain was knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the round of 16, with Karim Benzema's hat-trick hurting after the Ligue 1 side looked to control the tie.

Fast-forward nearly three weeks and Verratti's national team has also been excluded from World Cup qualification - their second consecutive failure to qualify.

Still, the 29-year-old midfielder may have another World Cup (failure), which can't be said for 37-year-old Giorgio Chiellini and 34-year-old Leonardo Bonucci.

Marco Verratti, often considered as one of the best midfielders in the World,  represented the Italy under-21 football team at the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, winning a runners-up medal, and being named to the all-star squad for the tournament. At senior level, he made his Italy debut in 2012, and represented his country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020, winning the latter tournament.

Martin Odegaard

A young talent, Martin ødegaard was snapped up by Real Madrid in 2015, but it was only after joining Arsenal that the attacking midfielder was able to reproduce the form at a consistent level. After sporadic playing time, Martin Odegaard joined Eredivisie clubs Heerenveen and Vitesse on consecutive loan spells between 2017 and 2019, as well as La Liga club Real Sociedad; He won the Copa del Rey with Real Sociedad in 2019. He signs for Arsenal in 2021 for an initial fee of £29m (€35m) following another loan.

The 15-year-old Norwegian rookie, who is now 23 and is approaching his 40th cap for his national team, is also captain.

However, he will not be able to increase that number in Qatar as Norway is eliminated after finishing third in the group after the Netherlands and Turkey.

Patrick Schick

Patrick Schick, Euro 2020's second top scorer and the winner of the tournament's goals, is a regular for the Czech Republic, scoring 17 goals for the national team in 33 appearances.

The Bayer Leverkusen striker has been in fine form this season, scoring 20 times in a number of games, including in a 7-1 win over Bundesliga struggler Gruther Folt Four balls.

With a collective transfer fee totaling around £65m, Schick's form has attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle United. However, he will not be in shop windows this winter after the Czech Republic lost to Sweden in extra time in the play-offs.

Erling Harland

However, Odegaard will not be the Norway international that Qatar will miss the most.

Along with Mbappe, Haaland is one of the most exciting talents in world football and is likely to be at a new club when the 2022 World Cup kicks off.

Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Manchester City are all arranging transfers for the Leeds-born 21-year-old, who has scored 13 goals (including two hat-tricks) in 16 international appearances and has won in Molde, Saskatchewan, and Sacramento. He scored 129 goals in 159 games between Erzburg and the Red Devils. Dortmund.

Sebastian Haller

A year ago, Haller's name might not have featured on such a list, but since joining Dutch side Ajax he has been in excellent form, especially in the Champions League.

In the 2021/22 season, the French-born striker became the first player to score four goals in a competition for the first time since Van Basten scored four in a 5-1 win over Sporting in 1992.

Haller's form didn't drop in the game, he became the first player to score in seven consecutive games and the fastest to score 10 goals in Ajax's final group game. player.

The striker changed his nationality from France to Ivory Coast in 2020 and has scored four goals in 12 international appearances.

However, the Elephants failed to finish at the top of the four-nation group, meaning they failed to qualify for Qatar. A 0-0 draw with Mozambique proved their defeat, with Côte d'Ivoire two points behind group champions Cameroon.

David Alaba

The Austrian captain is no stranger to big games having played for German giants Bayern Munich and now Real Madrid. However, after losing 2-1 to Wales in the play-off semi-finals, his national team was unsuccessful in their bid to qualify for the World Cup, with Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale causing injury.

The versatile Alaba, who made his Austrian debut in 2009, is now 29 and is hoping to get at least one more chance in World Cup qualifying.

However, the Austrian's sixth consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup means 32-year-old Marko Arnautovic may have missed out on the big stage.

Hakan Calhanoglu

Since his debut in 2013, the Inter Milan man has made 67 appearances for Turkey, scoring 14 goals and providing 13 assists.

However, he will be watching the World Cup from the sofa after Turkey lost 3-1 to Portugal in the semi-final play-offs.

Turkey's Burak Yilmaz took a penalty over the crossbar with his side trailing 2-1 and when Portugal

With his side trailing 2-1, Turkey's Burak Yilmaz fired a penalty over the crossbar and his misery was complete when Portugal scored third at the death.

Other notable Turkish names to miss out are Leicester City's Caglar Soyuncu and Everton's Cenk Tosun.

Mohamed Salah

The Liverpool striker was on the losing side as Senegal lifted the African Cup of Nations on penalties before seeing the Telanga Lions beat their World Cup winner again on penalties in the final round of the African qualifying round. a place.

That robbed Salah of the chance to bring his prolific club form to the world stage. Still, Liverpool fans will be able to see at least two other members of their dreadful front three play in Qatar, with Roberto Firmino's Brazil joining Senegal in the Middle East.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

It's no shock given that Gabon never qualified for the World Cup, but there's no doubt Aubameyang will be greatly missed, especially given his current form.

The striker has already scored seven goals in as many league games as the Catalans after a controversial move from Arsenal to Barcelona.

He has already scored more than 300 professional club goals, with another 30 coming from his national team.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Sweden's bid for a 13th World Cup final was ended by Poland in the final play-off stage, which undoubtedly ended Zlatan's chances of another World Cup.

There are signs that the AC Milan striker's age is finally catching up, however, with just seven goals in four injury-related solo appearances in La Liga this season.

But, this Zlatan we're talking about, so don't be surprised to see the Swede playing for his county in 2026 at 44!
